Ready, Steady Go...

Quick Startup.

Forget about the techno mumbo jumbo just get me recording something and fast. So you have a great idea, you need to get it down fast, before you forget it, no problems that's were Studio One has you covered.

Firstly on the start page, click create new song (see pic below)

Here you will be greeted by the song session setup (see pic below)

In the dialogue box you can give your idea a name, 'Best guitar riff in the world', for instance and either select the standard options given, a ready made template provided by Presonus or just click 'OK' and find yourself presented with a nice, new, blank session ready for recording.

Once you set your tempo and activated a click/metronome to play to keeping you in time, press 'T' on your keyboard and this will insert a track to record to. One important thing to remember is to select the input that your mic or guitar/keyboard is plugged into. In this case my guitar is plugged into 'Input R' or Input 2.

Your new track is loaded, press 'R' on the keyboard to arm your new track ready to record, press 'Numpad *' to start recording. You can press the 'Spacebar' or 'Numpad 0' to stop the recording.

Viola you've just recorded the best guitar riff in the world, we'll probably, we'll most likely not, but you never know.

Getting Started

The Three Pages

The Start Page

On opening up Studio One for the first time after initial installation is complete you'll find yourself firstly greeted by the Start Page. This is the portal into setting up a new session, gaining quick access to existing sessions and selecting options for hardware etc. You'll also find handy information from Presonus and their partners on available updates, extra software and special offers.

The Song Page

To access the Song Page you can click on the 'recent files tab' or 'songs tab'. This will take you directly into the familiar arranger view or console view or even both depending on how you like to record and mix. This is where you can access your tracks, edit them, mix them and anything else you need to do for your recording. The very cool feature is that you can have more than one song open at a time. This is extremely handy if your working on a song, lose direction or feel lethargic you can simply open another song, work on that one, feel refreshed and then go back and work on the original. It's also handy for cross referencing when working with multiple songs from the same album and that leads us into the last and third page of Studio One.

The Project Page

This is without doubt one of the most unique features of Studio One that elevates it above other Daw software. The Project Page is provided specifically for mastering songs. Here you can import numerous tracks which align one up, one down on the project page allowing you to balance out volumes, add effects such as compression, equalization, limiting etc to a singular song or across all songs. Having all the songs loaded up together really aids in creating a body of work the has natural flow and balanced levels for creating your latest album release.
